While walking with my dog this morning (often my best thinking time) I wondered how the topic of America’s Independence Day aligned with the topic of networking. At first it seemed like an unlikely, even cockamamie stretch. Then the wheels in my head started turning. I did see a correlation.  You’ll either agree or suggest I seek professional help.

The question that came up for me is: How are you exercising independence in your networking?

It seems there are so many options, rules, guidelines, protocols, and theories swirling around on how we should connect, socialize, build relationships, and practice the fine art and delicate science of business attraction. I know this as I’ve published a book full of these concepts. These are definitely worth learning and considering. However, when it comes down to it, why, where, how, and with whom you network is totally up to you and as unique as your fingerprint. What works best for me may not be what works best for you.  Furthermore, what works for me or you today, may no longer work for either of us in a few months or years.

The important thing here is to be sure you are constantly learning and trying new and different options, approaches, and techniques so you can continually hone in on what makes you the most comfortable and confident — and what gives you the best results.

I know we networking experts constantly say “networking isn’t about you.”  In this instance, however, it is. And it’s okay.

So as we Americans head into the summer holiday known best as The Fourth of July, a day filled with family, friends, fun, and fireworks, declare your intentionality and independence as a networker.  Decide you’ll be an educated, informed, and life-long student of the craft. And that ultimately you’ll do what feels right and true to you — and produces the results you’re seeking.

Have a happy and safe holiday!
